In the midst of a huge playoff series with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic Head Coach was able to relax and enjoy a moment to himself when he took home the 2009 AVN Male Performer of the Year.

“It was good to get out to Las Vegas for the night, get away from all this hoopla,” Van Gundy said.  “Now, I’m not the type to give the media quotes to run with, but I really kind of knew that this one was in the bag.  I knew I put in some great performances this year and I knew it was my time.  This basketball series, well that’s just not up to me.”

The AVN awards is an adult film awards show.  “Adult Video News” is the magazine that started the phenomenon and some people even call it, “The Oscars of Porn.”  Van Gundy beat out top performers like Peter North, Rocco Siffredi, Tommy Gun, and defending champion Evan Stone.

“It was a close contest,” Stone said.  “What am I going to do?  His crotch is great, but then you also throw in the weight and the facial hair and it’s really just too much to handle.  I’m happy for him.”

Van Gundy was rather unknown in this industry until his breakout year in 2007 when he took home Breakout Performer of the Year for his work in “Breakfast on Tiffany.”  He followed that up with a solid performance in 2008 with “Ferris Bueller’s Jerk-Off ,” which was nominated for Film of the Year.  What sealed the deal for Van Gundy this year was his moving performance in “Finest Form of Flattery; the Ron Jeremy Story,” in which Van Gundy did a spectacular job displaying the life of one of the porn industry’s legends.

“It was a big challenge for me, playing Ron Jeremy,” Van Gundy said.  “I mean, that’s like asking LeBron James to play like Michael Jordan.  It’s just impossible for somebody to try and step into their idol’s role, but I’m blessed that the academy thought I did well.  Plus that girl I got it with was, just, oh my, just oh my god.  I hope my performance inspires a lot of physically downtrodden people out there.  Just know that the little guy can make it in a world with hot girls.  And of course I don’t mean ‘little guy’ literally.”

Van Gundy has appeared in 13 adult films, 6 of which have won awards.  He has also known for in the industry for carrying many sexually transmitted diseases (STD) as he is an alum of SUNY Brockport.  He has also coached in the NBA in his free time for the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic.
